🐶 How to Teach Your Puppy to Sit — The First Step to Obedience

Hey friends! If you’ve just welcomed a puppy into your home — congratulations! You're in for lots of joy, wet noses, and, of course, training. The very first command every puppy should learn is ā€œSit.ā€Ā It’s simple, useful in everyday life, and helps your puppy focus. Let’s break down how to teach it properly and stress-free.

Why Teach ā€œSitā€?

At first glance, it may seem like just a cute trick. But in practice, the ā€œSitā€ command:

  • Helps control behavior (e.g., before going outside, feeding, or greeting guests)

  • Teaches patience and attention

  • Builds a solid foundation for more advanced training later on

And it’s a great way to start consistent, short training sessions without overwhelming your pup.

When Should You Start?

The sooner, the better. Puppies as young as 8–10 weeks are ready to start learning. The key is patience and positivity. Your goal is to help the puppy associate the command with something good — not with pressure or fear.

Step-by-Step: How to Teach ā€œSitā€

🐾 Step 1: Choose a calm location

Start at home, in a quiet area without distractions. Take a tasty treat in your hand.

🐾 Step 2: Capture the motion

Hold the treat close to your puppy’s nose, then slowly move your hand up and slightly backward. Your puppy will instinctively lower their bottom and sit.

🐾 Step 3: Add the cue

As soon as your puppy sits, clearly say ā€œSit,ā€Ā then immediately reward them with the treat and praise like ā€œGood job!ā€

🐾 Step 4: Repeat and reward

Do 4–5 repetitions per session. Don’t overdo it — 2–3 fun sessions a day for 3–5 minutes each are much better than one long, tiring session.

Tips That Will Save You Frustration

šŸ”¹ Be patient.Ā Don’t push. If your puppy gets distracted, take a short break.šŸ”¹ Never push their bottom down.Ā This causes stress and breaks trust.šŸ”¹ Always praise.Ā Even if it wasn’t perfect — reward the effort.šŸ”¹ Don’t overuse the command.Ā Asking for ā€œSitā€ 20 times in a row will bore your pup.šŸ”¹ Start using it in real life.Ā Once your puppy knows it at home, try using ā€œSitā€ before meals, walks, or greetings.

What If It Doesn’t Work?

If your puppy jumps, gets distracted, or lies down instead — that’s okay. They may be tired or confused. Try again later in a quieter place, or with a better reward.

ā€œSitā€ Is Just the Beginning

Once your puppy has mastered ā€œSit,ā€ it’ll be much easier to teach ā€œWait,ā€ ā€œDown,ā€ ā€œCome,ā€ and more. Most importantly — enjoy the process! Training is not just about obedience. It’s about building trust, communication, and growing together.

Ready to give it a try today? Grab a treat, keep it positive, and… let’s sit our way into great puppy manners!
