When temperatures rise, it’s important to take extra steps to keep your dog safe and comfortable. Dogs can overheat quickly, and without proper care, they may suffer from heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Here’s how you can help your furry friend stay cool and happy during hot weather.

1. Provide Plenty of Fresh Water

Always ensure your dog has access to clean, cool water throughout the day. Dehydration can happen fast in hot weather, so refill their bowl frequently and consider adding ice cubes to keep it cool longer.

2. Offer Shade and a Cool Resting Spot

If your dog spends time outside, make sure they have a shaded area to rest. Indoors, provide a cool space with a fan or air conditioning to help regulate their body temperature.

3. Avoid Walking During Peak Heat

Pavement and asphalt can become extremely hot and burn your dog’s paws. Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower. You can test the ground with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them!

4. Never Leave Your Dog in a Hot Car

Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can become dangerously high within minutes. Leaving your dog inside a hot car can lead to heatstroke and can be fatal.

5. Use Cooling Techniques

  • Dampen Their Belly, Not Their Back: Wetting your dog’s belly, paws, and armpits with cool (not icy) water helps them cool down more effectively. Wetting their back can actually trap heat.

  • Provide a Cooling Mat or Damp Towel: Let your dog lie on a cool surface to help lower their body temperature.

  • Use a Kiddie Pool: If your dog enjoys water, let them splash in a shallow pool to cool off.

6. Adjust Their Exercise and Playtime

Avoid intense physical activities during the hottest parts of the day. Instead, opt for gentle indoor games or water-based activities that help them stay cool while still having fun.

7. Watch for Signs of Overheating

Keep an eye out for signs of heat exhaustion, including:

  • Excessive panting

  • Drooling

  • Lethargy or weakness

  • Vomiting

  • Bright red gums

If your dog shows any of these symptoms, move them to a cool area, offer water, and contact your vet immediately.
